Expressionism Art Auction. Expressionism is the art of the emotive, the art of tension provoked by consciousness of the forces which surround modern humankind. The inevitability of world war, the rise of industrialization, the new power of capitalism - all these things weighed on men's minds at the beginning of the century, especially in Germany. Early twentieth century northern European art, especially in Germany c. 1905-25. Artists such as Rouault, Kokoschka, and Schiele painted in this manner. Expression Art, the artists. Blaue Reiter, the artists. Die Brucke, the artists. Blaue Reiter. German expressionist art movement, lasting from 1911 to 1914. It took its name from a painting by Kandinsky, Le cavalier bleu. Following the Brücke artists of the previous decade, this second wave of expressionism was led by Kandinsky, Klee, Marc, and Macke, in Munich. They sought to discover spiritual truths that they felt the impressionists had overlooked. Less united stylistically and as a group than the Brücke, their art ranged from the pure abstractions of Kandinsky to the romantic imagery of Marc. Die Brucke. (German, "The Bridge"), group of German expressionist artists, founded in Dresden in 1905, whose work marked the beginning of modern art in Germany. The principal members were the architectural student Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, in whose studio they regularly gathered, and his friends Erich Heckel, Fritz Bleyl, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, and, later, Emil Nolde and Max Pechstein. Rejecting academic tradition, realism, and impressionism, they drew inspiration from German medieval and Renaissance art, art nouveau, primitive art, and the French postimpressionists van Gogh, Gauguin, and the fauves. Their name symbolized their bridge of common interests and their link to the future. Most of Die Brücke were untrained in art, but the harsh colors and distorted shapes in their work successfully expressed their strong feelings and vivid imaginations. The dramatic contrasts of black and white in their woodcuts, a medium they revived, were especially effective. The group moved to Berlin in 1910 and disbanded in controversy in 1913. |
